Portrait of Maria Lopukhina:
At the times of Pushkin, the Portrait of Maria Lopukhina was responsible for one of the main “scary stories”. The girl’s life was short and unhappy and after the portrait was painted, she died of consumption. Her father, Ivan Lopukhin, was a well-known mystic and a master of a Masonic lodge. Therefore, a rumour appeared that he had managed to entice his dead daughter’s spirit into the portrait. It was believed that if a young girl looked at the picture, she would soon encounter misfortunes. According to salon gossipers, the portrait caused at least ten noblewomen to perish…
The art patron Tratyakov stopped the rumours in 1880 when he bought the portrait for his gallery. There was no heavy mortality registered among female visitors of the latter. The gossip subsided. But an unpleasant aftertaste remained!
